Donuts may be a delicious treat for humans, but furry friends should stay away.

If you have a sweet tooth, you probably enjoy a donut from time to time. But can dogs eat donuts as well? Unfortunately, no — your furry friend should not share your donut with you. While baked goods can, in moderation, be a part of an overall healthy diet and not cause any severe health issues for humans, the same can’t be said for dogs.

Let’s take a look at some of the reasons why donuts are dangerous for dogs.

What Are the Dangers of Dogs Eating Donuts?

Donuts are high in sugar, carbohydrates, and fats, which can all cause harm to your pup’s digestive system in the short term. If you feed your dog donuts regularly, they could develop even more serious issues, like hypertension, obesity, and pancreatitis.

The ingredients in donuts themselves are harmful, but the toppings used can also be full of sugar and other harmful compounds. And if the donut contains chocolate or artificial sweeteners like xylitol, eating it it could be life-threatening for your dog.

Can Dogs Eat Donuts in Small Amounts?

If your pup accidentally eats a small piece of a donut that doesn’t contain chocolate or xylitol, they will probably not have much more than an upset stomach. However, any chocolate or xylitol in your pet’s system should be taken very seriously.
