Can Dogs Eat Cashews?

Curious if dogs can eat cashews? Learn about the potential benefits and risks of cashews for your pup, and find out how to safely incorporate them into their diet.

cashews are safe for most dogs

Looking for a tasty new snack for your pup? While treats designed for your pup’s dietary and nutritional needs are usually the best bet, you may be tempted to give your pet a bite of your own snack every once in a while. This is especially true if your pet has mastered the art of puppy dog eyes.

When it comes to human snacks for dogs, cashews may not be at the top of your list. In fact, you may never have considered whether your dog could safely eat this type of nut. Are cashews bad for dogs the same way that other nuts are, such as pecans? Here’s everything you need to know.

Can Dogs Have Cashews?

If you’re wondering whether it’s safe to feed your dog a cashew or two, the answer is yes. Your pup can munch on a cashew without you needing to fear for their safety. The exception, of course, is if your dog has any type of nut allergy.

If your pet has never eaten nuts before, use caution when feeding them any new item from this food group, cashews included. Your dog may have an allergy that has gone unnoticed. If they display any signs of allergic reaction, such as shortness of breath, swelling, diarrhea, or vomiting, take your dog to the emergency vet right away.

Benefits of Cashews for Dogs

For dogs without nut allergies, cashews can actually have some health benefits, much like they can for humans. Cashews are high in a variety of essential nutrients, including omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, antioxidants, and protein.

With higher levels of these nutrients in their diet, your dog will enjoy multiple health benefits. A shinier coat, better digestion, more energy, and healthier aging are just a few traits linked to proper nutrition.

How Many Cashews Can a Dog Eat?

While cashews can provide some essential nutritional value to your dog, that doesn’t mean this snack should necessarily be a part of your dog’s everyday routine.

Cashews should be a once-in-a-while treat for your dog. A small handful once or twice a week is plenty to allow your dog to enjoy the rich buttery taste without overeating. Keep in mind that since cashews are high in fats, eating too many can lead to obesity, pancreatitis, bladder stones, and other health issues.

Additionally, make sure that your pet only eats unsalted cashews if you choose to feed them this snack. The cashews can be either raw or roasted, but the important part is that they aren’t salted, as too much sodium is unsafe for your dog. Avoid giving unshelled cashews to your pup. The shells of cashews contain anacardic acid, a toxin for pups that can cause gut and skin issues.

Make Sure Your Pup Snacks With Care

Can dogs eat cashews? While the answer is yes, the full picture goes deeper than that. Whenever you’re feeding your pup human food, even if it’s technically safe, exercise caution. Your dog’s digestive system works differently than yours, and they may not be able to handle the same levels of fat, sodium, and protein.
